Many customers are afraid that the steel parts of the solar street lights after few months become rusty. They have seen many light poles in such condition and they are afraid that it can happen also to them, but why some poles become rusty soon?

Currently, in the industry of solar street light application, there are suppliers that fool their clients into believing that they are receiving high-quality products at a lower cost. These suppliers skip necessary manufacturing procedures like hot dip galvanization and powder coating in order to lessen the cost of production. Although these products are definitely cheaper and more affordable, these often rust easily, leading to higher maintenance costs. It is therefore important for buyers to be vigilant when purchasing products such as solar street light poles.

We have 10 years of history in the solar street light industry. In this article, we will be sharing with you basic information about how we manufacture our solar streetlight poles.

Steel is an alloy composed of iron and carbon. Compared to other metals, steel is exceedingly strong and durable. The production and manufacturing of steel require less energy, and it is 100% reusable and recyclable. This metal is suitable for welding, but it is sensitive to galvanic corrosion.

A steel pole that is thermally galvanized can stand up to 40 years without maintenance. If you periodically maintain your pole, it could stand even longer, spanning more than a lifetime. This kind of pole is less vulnerable to collisions, as it can be shaped and formed in different ways. A steel pole is also cheaper, making it an attractive choice for most buyers.

As we all know, steel can only be used sustainably if it is treated and preserved accordingly. Without due treatment, steel can easily turn into iron rust. Here at Knight Industrial Co., Ltd., most of our poles are made and manufactured from steel Q235. This kind of steel requires being protected against oxygen, salt, and moisture, making it a sustainable and durable choice for solar street light poles. We treat our steel with two methods: Hot dip galvanization and powder coating.

In 1742, a French chemist named Malouin discovered that submerging steel into molten zinc protects it from oxygen, salt, and moisture. This process was transformed into an industrial scale in 1836 and has evolved to the process known as hot-dip galvanization today. Hot dip galvanization is the process of decreasing, staining, fluxing, and submerging an object in a hot zinc plating solution (see figure 1).

There are two main advantages to hot-dip galvanization. The first one is a full submersion, which coats the entire surface of the steel in a layer of zinc. The second one is the amalgamation of zinc with steel. Due to this, even if the zinc surface is damaged, the cathode effect prevents the process of corrosion.

In the hot dip galvanization, the composition of the material and its thickness determines the amount of zinc coating required for manufacturing. The EN SO 1461 standard explains the minimum and average thickness of zinc in different steel gauges.

The protecting layer in steel objects can also be obtained with the use of powder coating. In this process, an electrical charge is used in order to stick the powder to the intended steel surface. Afterwards, the steel will be heated to a 180°C in a furnace in order to ensure the adhesion of the powder to the steel.
